The hardness is one of the important indexes to determine the mechanical properties of the material, and the hardness test is a means which is used to discriminate and determine the quality of metallic materials or components of the product. Kekerasan adalah salah satu indeks penting untuk menentukan sifat mekanik material, dan uji kekerasan adalah cara yang digunakan untuk membedakan dan menentukan kualitas bahan logam atau komponen produk. The so-called hardness is meant the capability of the material which, under a certain condition, is capable to resist the press-in of another matter which will not produce residual deformation itself. Yang disebut kekerasan berarti kemampuan material yang, dalam kondisi tertentu, mampu menahan tekanan pada materi lain yang tidak akan menghasilkan deformasi residual itu sendiri. The larger the resisting power is, the higher the hardness will be, and vice versa.. Semakin besar daya penahannya, semakin tinggi kekerasannya, dan sebaliknya.

In the course of testing the mechanical properties, hardness measurement is the easiest, most economical, and rapidest method, and is also one of the measures which are used to inspect the quality of the product during manufacturing the machine. Dalam proses pengujian sifat mekanik, pengukuran kekerasan adalah metode termudah, paling ekonomis, dan tercepat, dan juga merupakan salah satu langkah yang digunakan untuk memeriksa kualitas produk selama pembuatan mesin. As the metallic hardness possesses the mutual corresponding relationship with certain other mechanic properties,hence, most metallic materials may approximately infer their other mechanical properties such as strength, fatigue, creep,wearing and internal damages etc. by determining their hardness. Karena kekerasan logam memiliki hubungan timbal balik yang saling berhubungan dengan sifat-sifat mekanik tertentu lainnya, maka, sebagian besar bahan logam kira-kira dapat menyimpulkan sifat mekanik lainnya seperti kekuatan, kelelahan, creep, kerusakan internal dan lain-lain dll dengan menentukan kekerasannya.
